Military Medal 'On the night of 15th/16th July, 1917, after the attacks on Post 8, 9 and 10, these two stretcher bearers [HERBERT and 215 J. GERMYN] went out in the face of an .......... enemy and carried in one dead and two wounded of our men. The casualties had been caused by enemy grenades, and they were therefore lying in very close proximity to the enemy's strongly held posts. When out of reach of enemy bombing these stretcher bearers came under enemy machine gun and rifle fire, but persisted in making three trips backwards and forwards between our own front line and the enemy posts. They were watched, and as far as possible protected by our men in our trenches, and their courageous action was a splendid example to all ranks. Again on the morning of 26th July, 1917, they carried a severely wounded man who was in urgent need of medical attention from our front line. The trenches been narrow and difficult in getting through with a stretcher causing delay, they got up out of the trench and in full view of the enemy carried their wounded comrade back to the aid post. Their courage was again a fine example and much commented upon by their comrades.'
