Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This N.C.O. has rendered excellent Service particularly on the morning of 2nd of September, during the operations North East of PERONNE when the Battery was pushed forward in close support of the Infantry. Sergeant Herbert was placed in charge of 4 ammunition wagons to supply the guns with ammunition from a forward dump. Throughout the day under heavy hostile fire including severe gas concentrations this N.C.O. supplied the guns with ammunition. His devotion to duty set a splendid example to the men under his command. The Battery was engaged in supporting the left flank of the attacking Infantry and the ammunition supply was of considerable importance. This N.C.O. has been of the greatest assistance to his Battery Commander by his devotion to duty.'
