'On the night of the 26th/27th June, 1917, at LA PETITE DOUVE FARM, MESSINES, when an enemy barrage dropped on this particular spot, and two of his Officers were killed, No. 796, Sergeant Thomas Walter HERITAGE gathered a party of men together, and although it was very dark, and under exceedingly heavy shell fire, succeeded in collecting the wounded and removing them to the Dressing Station. His coolness under very trying conditions was a fine example to those around him.'
