'On the 9th August 1918 near VAUVILLERS this man did wonderful work as a stretcher bearer. His Company was being exposed during the day, to heavy shell and Machine Gun fire and it became necessary to take risks in order to rescue the wounded. He showed an absolute disregard for his own personal safety and refused to stop working until the last of the wounded had been removed to the rear, thus setting a splendid example to his comrades.'
