Proceeded overseas to France from 8th Training Bn, Hurdcott, 10 January 1917; taken on strength, 32nd Bn, in the field, 12 April 1917.

Wounded in action, 19 October 1917 (shrapnel wound, nose, and gassed), and admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 10th Casualty Clearing Station, and thence to Ambulance Train No 15; admitted to 7th Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, 20 October 1917; transferred to No 6 Convalescent Depot, Etaples, 18 November 1917; to 26th General Hospital, Etaples, 25 November 1917; to No 6 Convalescent Depot, 3 December 1917; to No 5 Convalescent Depot, Cayeaux, 4 January 1918; to Base Depot, Havre, 26 January 1918; rejoined Bn, in the field, 11 February 1918.

On leave to United Kingdom, 24 February 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 11 March 1918.

Admitted to 14th Australian Field Ambulance, 28 April 1918 (myalgia), and transferred to 20th Casualty Clearing Station, and thence to Ambulance Train No 37; admitted to 7th Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, 30 April 1918; to England, 12 May 1918, and admitted same day to 1st Southern General Hospital, King's Heath Section, Birmingham (sciatica: severe). Transferred to No 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 22 May 1918; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 5 June 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Malta', 31 July 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 28 September 1918, for overland travel to Adelaide; discharged (medically unfit), Adelaide, 3 January 1919.
