'During the attack on the Beaurevoir Line, on 3 October, 1918, he displayed fine courage and leadership, when, with only four men, he captured and held an enemy trench for five hours against frequent counter attacks and under heavy enfilade fire, and later led his men against three successive outposts which were holding up the attack, shooting two of the enemy with his revolver and capturing two machine guns and more than twenty prisoners.'
