Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 17 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 25 June 1916. Reported as 'believed killed', 20 July 1916. Reported as 'killed in action, 20 July 1916', 28 July 1916. Statement, Red Cross File No 1331010, 699 Sergeant-Major A.E. HYNES, 31st Bn (patient, No 1 Australian General Hospital, Rouen), 20 March 1917: 'At Fleurbaix he was killed by M.G. Fire (sic) and the next day he and nineteen others were buried together. He was my mate and the Sgt. gave me the names of all those he had seen buried.' Second statement, 577 Pte O.J. ALSBURY, 31st Bn: 'Cpl.
