Military Medal 'This N.C.O. greatly distinguished himself at MESSINES on 30th March, 1918. While on patrol and enemy patrol was encountered, and after a sharp fight the enemy was dispersed and our patrol had suffered a number of casualties, and although wounded himself, Sergeant BARNES remained out until he had reassembled the whole of his party, and managed to get them back to our lines. On another occasion during a minor engagement on 14th May, 1918, near MORLANCOURT, East of AMIENS, when the enemy had effected an entry through a break in our line, a counter attack was organised, and Sergeant BARNES rushed a small enemy post single handed, and killed or took prisoner a garrison of 6 men.'
