'Near BROODSEINDE on the 16th October, 1917, Private HODGE displayed conspicuous courage and devotion to duty in repairing lines which were repeatedly broken by enemy shelling. Several linesmen had previously been wounded when working over the same ground and it was mainly through HODGE's utter disregard of personal risk that telephone communication between the various Units of the Battalion was maintained.'
