'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on the Hindenburg Line North of Bellicourt on 30th September 1918 and 1st October 1918. As Transport Corporal in charge of the pack mules which moved forward with the Battalion, Corporal HODGES, by his devotion to duty and never failing cheerfulness inspired his men and maintained control of the pack transport under very adverse weather conditions and heavy enemy shell fire. by his untiring efforts his comrades in the front line were kept well supplied with bombs and S.A.A. during the attack, and with hot meals and water after the attack was brought to a successful conclusion. This gallant N.C.O. did not rest for 36 hours during which time he made repeated journeys forward with supplies.'
