Embarked Sydney, 18 May 1916; disembarked England, 20 July 1916.

Proceeded overseas to France, 23 September 1916; reallotted from 52nd to 31st Bn, 7 October 1916; taken on strength, 31st Bn, in the field, and allotted regimental number 882A, 9 October 1916.

Admited to 15th Field Ambulance, 1 February 1917 (trench feet); transferred to 1st South Midland Casualty Clearing Station, 10 February 1917; to Ambulance Train, 12 February 1917, and admitted to 6th General Hospital, Rouen, 13 February 1917 (nephritis); to England, 26 February 1917, and admitted to 3rd Southern General Hospital, Oxford, 27 February 1917. transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 30 March 1917. Discharged on furlough, 10 April 1917, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 25 April 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 3 June 1917; transferred to 47th Bn, 29 June 1917; taken on strength, 47th Bn, in the field, Belgium, 29 June 1917.

Detached for duty with 12th Machine Gun Company, 22 September 1917; rejoined 47th Bn, 21 October 1917.

Detached to 4th Canadian Tunnelling Company as miner, 11 January 1918; rejoined 47th Bn, 9 March 1918.

Wounded in action, 2 May 1918 (bomb wound, left hand), and admitted to 13th Australian Field Ambulance, and transferred same day to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station, and thence to 4th Casualty Clearing Station; to Ambulance Train, 4 May 1918, and admitted same day to 3rd General Hospital, Rouen. Transferred to England, 5 May 1918, and admitted to Southwark Military Hospital, 6 May 1918 (gun shot wound, left hand: severe). transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 11 July 1918; discharged to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 19 July 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Somerset', 4 December 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 15 January 1919, for onward travel to Brisbane; discharged, Brisbane (medically unfit), 24 February 1919.
