'When in action near BROODSEINDE on the 17th/18th October, 1917, he displayed great courage and coolness under very heavy enemy barrages. When the line had been blown in and men buried he organised working parties to dig them out and by his cheerful bearing under very trying conditions he inspired his men with confidence. During the whole of the operation he showed great judgment in distribution of his men in a very heavily shelled sector, thus saving many lives.'
