'On the morning of 17th September, 1917, Lorry No. 11741 became bogged at Sheet 28.I.11.d.4.5, near BIRR CROSS Roads. Sergeant HOOPER, who was N.C.O. in charge, gave instructions and personally supervised the dismantling of the lorry. Later finding a large lifting Jack he re-assembled and managed to extricate the vehicle. The party were the whole time under consistent enemy shell fire. This N.C.O. has at all times shown a continuous devotion to duty under adverse conditions.'
