Military Medal 'For gallant and cheerful devotion to duty near BROODSEINDE. In the early morning of the 18th October, 1917, as a Platoon Sergeant on No. 3 outpost he personally laid several coils of wire in front of the post under heavy shell fire - an intended enemy attack had been reported and it was necessary to strengthen the defences Later in the morning when the garrison of the post had been reduced by casualties to six men and the Lewis gun had been knocked out he volunteered to go back to Company Headquarters for a new gun - the route to Company Headquarters was over open ground and under direct enemy observation and fire. He set a fine example at all times to his men.'
