Wounded in action, Gallipoli, 7 August 1915. Transferred to 6th Infantry Brigade Headquarters, Moascar, 18 March 1916. Seconded to command (temporarily) 6th Brigade Machine Gun Company, France, 1 April 1916. Granted temporary rank of Lieutenant Colonel while holding appointment of 1st Anzac Corps Machine Gun Officer, 20 January 1917. Relinquished temporary rank and resumed regimental duty with 2nd Machine Gun Bn, 14 March 1918. Commenced return to Australia on board 'Orca', 19 February 1919; discharged, 4 June 1919.
