War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Joined 8th Bn, Gallipoli, 6 August 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, 7 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Transferred to 60th Bn, and taken on strength, 24 February 1916. Loss of equipment due to neglect: to be debited in soldier's Pay Book, 20 May 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Reported Missing, 19 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 4 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. Note, Red Cross File No 1370702: 'No trace Germany. Cert. by Capt. Mills. 10.10.19.' Statement, 1744 Pte T. SALMON, 60th Bn (patient, Bolton Hospital, England), 26 October 1916: 'Informant states that on July 19th at Vermelles (sic), Hosie was killed in the advance. He was hit three times. Informant was next man to him and tried torouse him but couldn't.' Second statement, 2666 Pte A. PICKARD, D Company, 60th Bn, 3 May 1917: 'I was near this man in the big attack at Fromelles on July 19/16. I saw him killed instantly by a shell. He was really blown to pieces. It was near "Levanti (sic) Front". Hosie had just got over when shell caught him. Ground was not held. It was not possible to bury him, fire was too heavy. Hosie was a brave man [who] would not remain in rear but pushed to the front.' Third statement, 2666 Pte A. PICKARD, 60th Bn, 17 July 1917: 'At V.C. Avenue, Armentieres front, about 22nd or 23rd July 1916, I was in the line after the attack which took place on the 19th July and saw Pte. Hosie buried.
