Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 28 May 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 4 June 1916. Taken on strength, 9th Bn, 29 July 1916.

Wounded in action, 7 May 1917, and admitted to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station (shell wound, knee and thigh); to 2nd Canadian General Hospital, Treport, 8 May 1917. Transferred to England, 14 May 1917; admitted to Brook War Hospital, Woolwich, 15 May 1917. Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 3 June 1917. Granted furlough, 11 June 1917, to report to No. 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 26 June 1917.
