'At POZIERES, FRANCE, during the whole period 21st. July - 6th. August 1916, Gunner HOWARD showed great coolness and devotion to duty. During the attack by the 1st Australian Division he acted as runner and safely delivered messages under heavy shell fire both for his and another brigade, as well as on occasions for infantry commanders. Nearly all the time the battery was in the line he was on this and F.O.O. telephonist and linesman duty. He always volunteered for the latter duty if he throught he knew the way better than other men. He was on forward observation duty also in the 2nd Australian Division advance.'
