'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations on the 4th October 1917, in the vicinity of ZONNEBEKE. Pte. HOWAT constantly dressed wounded men over a large area of the captured position and his judgement undoubtedly saved the lives of many wounded. He remained on duty when his platoon was withdrawn after the completion of their task, until assisted in a state of exhaustion to the rear. His work was commended on by all who came into contact with him. East of YPRES.'
