'For conspicuous gallantry in action. After an enemy mine explosion causing casualties, he organized the rescue parties and led them up to the mine, thereby saving many lives. and performed valuable exploration work underground. He carried out this arduous and dangerous work continually for 24 hours.'

Wounded in action, 22 June 1917 (gun shot wound, abdomen, buttock); transferred to 7th General Hospital, St Omer, 13 July 1917; to 59th General Hospital, Havre, 16 July 1917. Transferred to England, 30 July 1917, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital; transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, 3 September 1917. Granted furlough to report to No. 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire.

Proceeded overseas to France, 1 March 1918; rejoined unit, 7 March 1918. Granted period of Non-Military Employment Leave with pay and subsistence, 4 March-4 July 1919; leave cancelled, 10 June 1919.
