'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He repeatedly did excellent work in repairing telephone lines under heavy fire. When a signal station near to his position was destroyed by shell fire, he laid a new line under difficult and dangerous conditions, and maintained it throughout the night. He showed great skill and determination.'
