Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 29 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 4 April 1916.

Proceeded to Allied Machine Gun School, Camiers, 29 June 1916; taken on strength, 1st Machine Gun Company, in the field, 2 August 1916.

Admitted to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 16 August 1916 (injury to right ankle: on duty, soldier not to blame); transferred to England, 18 August 1916, and admitted to Lord Derby War Hospital, Warrington, 19 August 1916; discharged on furlough, 4 October 1916, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 19 October 1916.

Found guilty of being absent without leave, 2 am, 20 November, to 2 pm, 27 November 1916: awarded 14 days' confined to barracks, and forfeited 8 days' pay under Royal Warrant. Marched out to Machine Gun Training Depot, Grantham, 14 December 1916.
