'For conspicuous courage and devotion to duty during operations from 29th September to 2nd October, 1918, near BONY. Lance Corporal IRVING did exceptionally good work in maintaining liaison between Battalion Headquarters and the Regimental Transport. On three occasions he visited Battalion Headquarters and on learning the new location of the Battalion reported to the Transport Officer and guided the Transport to within 5900 yards of the Front Line, and thus ensured hot food and supplies reaching the Battalion each night.'
