Found guilty at sea, 27 July 1917, of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, 26 July 1917: awarded 3 days' confinement to barracks; disembarked Liverpool, 26 August 1917; marched into Pioneer Training Bn, Fovant, 26 August 1917. Proceeded to France through Folkestone, 28 November 1917; marched into 1st Australian Divisional Base Depot, Havre, 30 November 1917; moved out to field, 2 December 1917; taken on strength of 1st Pioneer Bn, 5 December 1917. Transferred to 1st Machine Gun Bn and taken on strength, 9 April 1918.

Found guilty in the field, 5 June 1918, of being absent from company muster parade, 3 June 1918: awarded 2 days' Field Punishment No 2; proceeded to United Kingdom on leave, 19 October 1918; reported absent without leave, 26 November 1918; apprehended by police, London, 20 January 1919.

Found guilty by District Court Martial, London, 30 January 1919, of absenting himself without leave in that he in London at 6.00 am, 4 November 1918 failed to proceed overseas to rejoin his unit in France as it was his duty to do and remained absent until apprehended by the Civil Power in Ireland, 4.00 pm, 20 January 1919: sentenced to 6 months' detention. Admitted to Lewes Detention Barracks, 5 February 1919; discharged from detention barracks to No 1 Group, 25 April 1919 (remainder of sentence remitted); marched into Overseas Training Brigade, Deverill, 28 April 1919; moved out to headquarters, 16 July 1919. Discharged from the Australian Imperial Force, London, 8 August 1919.
