Military Cross

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Although he had been twice buried by shell fire, he proceeded through an intense hostile barrage to the front line, which had been temporarily thrown into confusion, and at once reorganized the line under very great difficulties and at great personal risk. By his excellent example he has restored the moral of the front line troops, and undoubtedly saved many lives.'

Military Cross

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in command of two machine guns. When an outpost line had been overrun by the enemy he brought his guns into action, performing fine service, and covering the withdrawal of the infantry. He remained in action until surrounded on three sides, when he brought his guns safely back to a position where he was able to come into action again. Throughout the operations he set a splendid example of coolness to all ranks.'
