'On night 29th August, 1916, he successfully drove off a party of the enemy which had established itself in a portion of the trench just gained. The enemy had posted a machine gun which enfiladed a section of the trench held by us. Private JAMES attacked the enemy single handed, after bombing for nearly half an hour succeeded in destroying the gun and driving the enemy off.'
