Proceeded to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 30 August 1915.

Admitted No 1 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 18 November 1915 (septic arm); admitted to Floriana Military Hospital, Malta, 24 November 1915; discharged to duty, 3 March 1916; embarked for Egypt, 4 March 1916; marched in Overseas Base, Ghezireh, 10 March 1916; proceeded to rejoined unit from Overseas Base, Ghezireh, 14 March 1916.

Taken on strength of 58th Bn from 6th Training Bn, 20 April 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 17 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 June 1916.

Killed in action, 19 July 1916.

Buried at Rue du Bois Military Cemetery by Reverend F.P. Williams, 20 July 1916.

Statement, Red Cross File No 1420703, H.S. MITCHELL, 58th Bn (patient, 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, England), 11 November 1916: 'Witness staes that he saw the above man killed on the afternoon of July 19th 1916 at Fleurbaix. They were going up a communication trench at the time, previous to advancing, and James was knocked back into his arms dead. He was not hit apparently. Probably died of concussion. He was buried in a cemetery, name unknown, about ½ mile back.'
