Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid against the enemy's defences North East of SAILLY-le-SEC, South West of ALBERT, this soldier, and his dash and daring particularly in the assault, were a feature of the operation. After sharing in the hand to hand fight with the enemy, he withdrew with his the others towards our lines. Noticing one of his comrades fall wounded within the enemy's lines, he went to his assistance, dressed his wounded comrade, and assisted him back to our lines. It was daylight, and although the enemy barrage swept No Man's Land, Private JAMES pressed on, still burdened by his comrade's weight. His conspicuous bravery inspired those about him to deeds of similar valour. he set a fine example of courage and determination.'
