'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He organized working parties, took charge of men who had lost their officers, and established a communication trench through an enemy barrage. He collected enemy prisoners, forming them into stretcher-bearers, and personally conducted these parties through the barrage. Throughout the operations he set a splendid example to all ranks.'
