'For great bravery and devotion to duty during the attack and occupation of the HINDENBURG LINE East of BULLECOURT. He did splendid work as bayonet man while in the trenches on 11th April 1917. When the order to retire was given he fell back, but seeing 2/Lieutenant DENNIS badly wounded near the enemy wire he assisted him back under enemy machine gun fire.'
