'On 4th August, 1917, at NIEUPORT, the 16th Battery position was shelled from 3 to 5 p.m. with 5.9", about 150 shells falling during this period causing it to be evacuated. A shell struck a billet seriously wounding and burying two of the batery under a wall. Gunner BARTLETT left the cupolad dugout in which he was sheltering and with three others worked in the wrecked room until the two wounded men were released. During this period several other shells burst close against the billet. He then assisted to get the wounded men away under fire. Throughout he displayed great bravery and determination, and devotion to his wounded comrades.'
