Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the advance east of Villers Bretonneux, on 8 August 1913. Acting an infantry observer in a fighting tank he several times got out and guided it through the mist under heavy fire, to keep it in touch with the infantry progress. Many enemy were encountered, and on one occasion he and another man killed eight before he could rejoin the tank.'
