'At AUGER WOOD on the 11th August 1918 during the counter attack by the enemy, this N.C.O. displayed great ability in handling his Lewis Gun Section. After his crew had become casualties he advanced to the attack firing his gun from the hip. He succeeded in killing 1 N.C.O. and 5 other ranks during this encounter. All the time this action was in progress this N.C.O. was under terrific machine gun fire. Throughout the whole of the operations on the 10th and 11th August the conduct of this N.C.O. was an example of fine soldierly qualities coupled with marked ability.'
