Military Medal 'For devotion to duty during an enemy attack on our lines near ALBERT on April 3rd 1918. During a heavy enemy Artillery and Machine gun barrage this N.C.O. set a splendid example to his section by standing up on the Railway Line and giving Fire Orders. Regardless of his own safety he directed the fire of his section on the enemy who were advancing. This devotion to duty inspired and maintained the excellent morale of the men in a time of stress. Lance Corporal Johnstone was in the act of going over to meet the enemy when he was wounded.'
