Medals |
Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the operations on 8th and 9th August 1918 near VILLERS-BRETONNEUX. Private JONES was in charge of the stretcher bearers of a front line company during the attack and rendered splendid service in dressing the wounded and organising stretcher bearer parties during the advance to the final objective. On 9th August 1918 when the advance was continued by the 2nd Australian Division these troops immediately came under heavy shell and machine gun fire, causing many casualties. Private JONES immediately took out his stretcher parties and made several trips under very heavy fire. he also organised stretcher bearer parties from the prisoner passing by. The prompt action and devotion to duty displayed by this man considerably relieved the strain from the stretcher bearers attached to the advancing troops and his coolness under fire was a source of inspiration to his comrades.'
