'In the advance on 9th August 1918 near RAINECOURT, east of AMIENS, he was No. 1 of a Lewis gun. He took his gun forward in advance of the final objective under heavy machine gun and artillery fire and engaged enemy machine guns which were causing many casualties to his platoon. He showed absolute disregard of danger and set a splendid example. He succeeded in reducing the fire of the guns opposite his front to a great extent. Finally a shell landed alongside him and wounded him severely. He refused to leave until he had handed over his gun, seen it was still in action and pointed out his targets to his successor.'
