Found guilty, on board Troopship A15, 26 March 1916, of disobeying a lawful command: award, reverted to the ranks and forfeited 14 days' pay.

Taken on strength of 55th Bn, Ferry Post, 20 April 1916.

Admitted to No 14 Field Ambulance, Ferry Post, 17 May 1916 (parotitis); transferred to Australian Casualty Clearing Station, Ferry Post, 18 May 1916; discharged to unit, 28 May 1916; rejoined unit, 30 May 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916.

Statement, Red Cross File 1470105, 4819 Pte J.R. HANKINSON, 55th Bn (patient, No 1 Australian General Hospital, Rouen), 3 November 1916: 'He was killed on the 19th July near Laventie. I saw a man who buried him at Sailly ... We had a charge at Laventie, south of Armentieres. Jone had been a Cpl. and got reduced in Egypt.'

Second statement, 4861 Corporal W.G.F. NIXEY, 55th Bn (patient, No 8 Stationary Hospital, Rouen), 24 November 1916: 'Killed by machine gun on retiring from German lines, saw him lying dead. We had an armistice the next morning for burial. He was buried in the rear of our lines while I was close by.'

Third statement, 4819 Pte J.E. HANKINSON, B Company, 55th Bn, 30 November 1916: 'He as killed at Fromelles on July 20th, by shell concussion. There was not a mark on his body. This occurred before we went into the charge. Several of my mates saw him. Amongst these was Pte. Greenaway, 4812, B. Co. He gave me the facts as an eyewitness. Jones's body was buried next morning. I think he lies in the cemetery at Sailly.'

Fourth statement, 3124A Pte H.J. ROBINSON, 55th Bn (patient, No 6 General Hospital, Rouen), 15 January 1917: 'I was with a burial party on the 20th July, and I buried him. He had been killed by a bomb. He is uried in an Australian Cemetery on the right hand side of the road to Sailly. There was a person to conduct the service and he has a cross over him.'
