'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the battery was being heavily shelled, he assisted in digging out three men who had been buried in a dug out, and carrying them to safety. He then carried a badly wounded officer to cover, and returned to his gun to satisfy himself as to the safety of his men. Later, under heavy fire, he assisted in extinguishing a fire in a gun pit, which had been caused by enemy shelling.'
