' For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. After his section leader was wounded he took charge and led it forward throught heavy machine gun and rifle fire, and continued fighting after being wounded himself. He stuck to it until the consolidation fo the final objective was completed, when he had to give in. Right throught the attack he showed coolness and daring, inspiring the men with him'
