Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 26 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 3 April 1916.

Taken on strength, 20th Bn, in the field, 16 May 1916; regimental number changed to 3542A.

Wounded in action, 29 July 1916 (gun shot wound, back), and admitted to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 23rd General Hospital, Etaples, 30 July 1916; to England, 2 August 1916, and admitted to East Leeds War Hospital, 3 August 1916 (gun shot wound, leg and back: slight).

Found guilty, Perham Downs, 26 October 1916, of being absent without leave from 3 pm, 18 October, to 4 pm, 25 October 1916: awarded 168 hours' detention.

Proceeded overseas to France, 19 November 1916; rejoined Bn, in the field, 11 December 1916.

Admitted to 7th Australian Field Ambulance, 11 April 1917 (Condylomata: genital warts),and transferred to 56th Casualty Clearing Station, and then to Ambulance Train No 23; admitted to 51st General Hospital, Etaples, 16 April 1917; discharged to duty, 3 May 1917; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 18 days.

Admitted to 39th General Hospital, Havre, 28 May 1917 (not yet diagnosed); discharged to Base Depot, 7 June 1917; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 11 days; rejoined Bn, in the field, 30 October 1917.

On leave to England, 28 February 1918; rejoined Bn, Belgium, 17 March 1918.
