''For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of the construction of a strong point. To reach the point he had to lead his party a distance of yards in the open from the position of assembly under heavy enemy barrage fire, and it was due to his dogged determination and able leadership that the strong point was correctly sited and an invaluable defence construted. His action set a splendid example to all ranks.''
