Proceeded to Gallipoli with 21st Bn, 29 August 1915. Returned to Australia, medically unfit, 17 September 1915; discharged, 7 April 1916.

Re-enlisted; embarked from Australia, 16 December 1916; disembarked Plgmouth, England, 18 Februarg 1917.

Served on Western Front. Declared a deserter, 11 December 1917, and struck off the Bn strength. Found guilty of desertion, 15 February 1918, in that he was absent without leave, 13 October 1917 to 17 January 1918. Sentenced to 10 years' penal servitude; 5 years of the sentence remitted, 19 February 1918. Sentence suspended, and rejoined unit, 21 June 1918; sentence remitted, 4 May 1919.
