Distinguished Conduct Medal

'He was in command of his subsection on 1 May 1918 during the enemy attack on the brigade position. He kept his guns firing while the troops on his left and right were retiring, and until the enemy had advanced to within 200 yards. He then retired and took up another position to support the further retirement and continued firing until the enemy were again within 200 yards of his guns. Throughout the retirement he set a fine example of courage and determination to his men, and showed great skill and energy in handling his guns.'
