War service: proceeded to Gallipoli from Egypt, 9 May 1915. Admitted to hospital, 23 June 1915 (diarrhoea); transferred to Anglo-American Hospital, Ghezireh, 30 June 1915; rejoined unit at Gallipoli, 31 October 1915. Evacuated from Gallipoli, 20 December 1915.

Taken on strength, 1st Light Horse Regiment, 1 March 1916; transferred to 3rd Light Horse Regiment, 5 April 1916.

Following an adverse report from the Commanding Officer, 3rd Light Horse Regiment, the GOC, 1st Australian Light Horse Brigade, wrote: 'In my opinion this officer is not capable of taking command of a Regiment, he is lazy and indifferent about any work given him and the general handling of his Regiment during the times when he has been temporarily in command has been anything but satisfactory', and directed that he be returned to Australia for discharge.

Commenced return to Australia from Suez on board HT 'Willochra', 8 March 1917; disembarked Melbourne, 26 April 1917; arrived Adelaide, 27 April 1917; discharged, 27 April 1917.
