'At BULLECOURT on the morning of 12th May. Lance Corporal Edward Joseph Augustine LAWLER displayed great coolness and devotion to duty. When under very heavy enemy shell fire he showed initiative in re-organising his men after the senior N.C.O.s of his platoon were killed and wounded. he handled his party with marked ability, set a splendid example throughout the operations and inspired his men under the most trying conditions. His great coolness and devotion to duty deserves special recognition.'

'During the attack of 26th September this N.C.O. was in charge of a platoon and after 3 Officers in his company had been wounded he worked, untiringly helping his Company commander all in his power to keep the Company together. he was perfectly cool throughout the action and in no small measure was he responsible for the excellent work carried out during the enemy Counter-attacks, he held his men well in hand and used his own initiative on several occasions.'
