Found guilty, 17 April 1918, of being absent without leave: awarded forfeiture of 6 days' pay. Found guilty, 24 April 1918, of being absent without leave: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeiture of 29 days' pay. Found guilty, 13 July 1918, of being absent without leave: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeiture of 15 days' pay. Rejoined unit, 16 August 1918. Found guilty, 19 August 1918, of being absent without leave from 7-13 August 1918: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeiture of 34 days' pay.

Found guilty by Field General Court Martial, 16 December 1918, of desertion from 4 October-28 November 1918: awarded 3 years' penal servitude; commuted to 2 years'.

Found guilty by Field General Court Martial, 24 March 1919, of taking part in a mutiny at Calais in that he, with others, combined not to fall in after being ordered by proper authority to do so. Awarded 12 years' penal servitude. Transferred to England for despatch to Portland Convict Prison, 18 April 1919. Sentence commuted to 2 years, 15 August 1919; transferred to Bristol Prison, 29 August 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Pakeha', 6 October 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 24 November 1919; discharged, 17 December 1919.
