'On the morning of the 24th instant Lance Corporal Lawson was sent to AHOOGE with 4 pack animals to see that they were loaded up with stakes to be taken to the forward R.E. dump in GLENCORSE Wood. The stakes being for use in marking tracks. On arrival at HOOGE very heavy shelling was going on the main road and all traffic was stopped. The dumps on the road were burning. Lance Corporal Lawson knowing it was urgent to get these stakes himself took men over on to the MENIN road at HOOGE gathered his stakes despite the heavy fire and loading the mules led the party out to the forward dump. He returned and made a second trip, despite the heavy shelling and thus got the whole of the stakes forward.'
