War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Sydney, 16 February 1916; disembarked Egypt, 22 March 1916. Joined 54th Bn, Ferry Post, 1 April 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Wounded in action, 19/10 July 1916. Now, 24 January 1917, reported as ' Wounded and Missing, 19/20 July 1916'. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 4 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19/20 July 1916'. Statement, Red Cross File No 1580107, 4501 Pte William GREEN, C company, 54th Bn (patient, Tooting Hospital, London SW, England), 19 May 1917: 'I was only about 30 yards away from Lee (sic) on his right when he was shot through the forehead by a sniper and killed outright. I saw him fall, and we had just taken the first line German Trench at Fromelles between Lille and Armentieres and Lee (sic) was killed as he was standing upright in the trench in the act of lighting a cigarette. We had to retire afterwards and I cannot say where he was buried ... He was killed on July 19th at about 7.30 p.m.' |
