'On the night of September 25-26 in POLYGON WOOD this man displayed exceptional courage - under the worst conditions he assisted in carrying wounded .........the enemy Barrage. This Barrage was such that it seemed impossible for a man to pass through it alive. Throughout the action his gallantry and devotion to duty were such as to set a very fine example and ..............helped with this prompt evacuation of the wounded.'
