Admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, 7 September 1916 (haemorroids); marched in to No. 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 17 October 1916. Found guilty, 4 November 1916, of being absent without leave from midnight, 29 October to 3 pm, 30 October 1916: admonished and forfeited 1 day's pay. Marched out to No. 4 Command Depot, Wareham, 9 November 1916. Marched in to 3rd Division Details, 12 December 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 31 December 1916; taken on strength, 36th Bn, 4 January 1917.

Admitted to 1st Casualty Clearing Station, 3 February 1917 (haemorroids); transferred to Divisional Rest Station, 5 February 1917; to 3rd Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, 12 February 1917 (piles, gastritis); to No. 7 Convalescent Depot, 20 February 1917; to 2nd Australian General Hospital, Wimereux, 28 February 1917; to England, 1 March 1917, and admitted to 3rd Australian General Hospital, 2 March 1917; transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, 12 April 1917; granted furlough, 16 April 1917, to report to No. 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 1 May 1917.
